The National Cyber ​​Security Center (NCSC) has declared post-Christmas sales a “favorite” for scammers. Reports from Action Fraud, the national fraud and cybercrime reporting center, have shown that nearly 100,000 shoppers have been victims of online fraud in the past 13 months, with more than £ 60million that would have been lost.

The NCSC wants shoppers to use strong, distinct passwords for the most important accounts – including email, banking, and payments – with three random words as their passwords.

People have also been advised to be wary of emails, text messages, or websites that sound too good to be true.

Customers were advised to use a credit card for online payments when possible and to research stores through trustworthy consumer websites before purchasing any products to ensure they are legitimate.

When shopping online, people also need to fill in only the mandatory information on websites.

Steve Barclay, Minister of Cybercrime and Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, said: “With a record number of cyber attacks this year, it is crucial that we all take action to protect ourselves and our families from crooks during our online shopping, especially in sales, which have become a favorite of scammers.

“Over the past year, government and police action has resulted in many convictions for cyber fraud and we should all play our part in eradicating this terrible crime which can destroy lives.
