Delhi Police say no to Munawar Faruqui show in capital after report says ‘it will affect community harmony’

The Delhi Police Licensing Unit on Sunday refused permission for comedian Munawar Faruqui’s show in the nation’s capital. This follows a report to the Central District Police Unit stating that “the show will affect community harmony in the area”.

Earlier this week, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) also wrote to Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora demanding that Faruqui’s show be canceled and threatening to protest if the show was not cancelled.

“An artist by the name of Munawar Faruqui is hosting a show at the Kedarnath Stadium of the Delhi Civic Center on August 28. This person makes fun of Hindu gods and goddesses in his show. For this reason, communal tensions have recently erupted in Bhagyanagar. I urge you to cancel this show immediately…otherwise Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal activists will stage protests against the show,” the letter read, according to reports.

The cancellation of the Delhi show comes just a week after police in Bengaluru denied permission for his ‘Dongri to nowhere’ show, which was due to take place in the capital of Karnataka on August 20. The Bengaluru event was canceled as the organizers failed to get permission. to hold him in the city, according to police.

Notably, the Jai Shri Ram Sena, a fringe organization, had lodged a complaint against the comedian and the organizers with Bengaluru Police Commissioner CH Pratap Reddy. The organization claimed in its complaint that Faruqui offended Hindus on his shows by making insulting remarks about Lord Ram and Goddess Sita. For the same reasons, the comedian had previously been refused permission to perform in the city in November 2021.

The developments come even as suspended BJP MP T. Raja Singh Lodh was sent to jail on Thursday after Hyderabad police arrested him and invoked the Preventive Detention (PD) Act.

Raja Singh, who was arrested for the second time in three days, was later transferred to Cherlapally prison, on the outskirts of the city. On August 22, he uploaded an offensive video against the Prophet Muhammad with the intention of provoking all sections of the population and thus causing an attack on public peace and tranquility, the police statement said.

When he was taken into custody at his home on August 23, Raja Singh said police were working to remove his video from YouTube, but that won’t stop him from posting his other speeches and videos on this question.

Minutes before his arrest, the MLA released a video accusing Telangana minister KT Rama Rao of the communal tension situation in Hyderabad by allowing comedian Munawar Faruqui to perform in Hyderabad. Raja Singh was arrested hours after pointing it out in two old cases.

The controversial MP was arrested hours after officers from Shaninayathgunj and Mangalhat police stations issued the notices under Section 41-A of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
