Jackson police investigate capital city’s first homicide of 2022

A woman was killed at a Jackson hotel Tuesday morning after a marital argument escalated and shots were fired, Jackson police said.

Jackson Police were called around 7 a.m. to investigate a shooting at the Economy Inn, 3016 W. Northside Dr., police spokesperson Sam Brown said.

Brown said a man and woman had a marital argument in a hotel room and the woman was shot. She died of her injuries, Brown said.

Police did not identify the victim or the suspect. The suspect has been arrested and could face a murder charge, Brown said.

“Based on the investigation, these types of interpersonal crimes involving people who know each other are very difficult to predict and / or prevent,” Jackson Police Chief James Davis said in a statement.

Davis added that 86% of homicides in 2021 occurred as a result of interpersonal disputes where victims knew the offender.

This is the first homicide in Jackson in 2022, according to records kept by the Clarion Ledger. The capital recorded 155 homicides in 2021, making it the highest number in history and surpassing the record of 130 homicides in 2020.
