New research has revealed that North Ayrshire has one of the worst crime rates in Scotland.

In 2020-21, North Ayrshire had the 8th highest crime rate of any local authority in Scotland, according to Scottish Government statistics.

The area had 497 crimes per 10,000 people, compared to the Scottish average of 451.

Jamie Greene, West Scotland MSP has now called on the Government to provide urgent funding to increase police numbers.

He said: “Police in our community work tirelessly day in and day out to fight crime and keep people safe, but they are being let down by this SNP government.

“The SNP police amalgamation has significantly reduced the number of frontline police officers in North Ayrshire, and nationally the number of police officers has reached an all time high.

“Police stations have also closed, making police less available in the community.

“Across Scotland, more than 100 police stations have been closed since the centralization of policing by the SNP.

“I am on the side of local policing, which is why I support proposals to increase the number of police officers patrolling our streets with a Local Policing Act.

“It would also give our community greater influence over police decisions and make our communities a safer place.”
