Peterborough council appoints new chief financial officer

A new interim Director of Finance and Section 151 is expected to be appointed by Peterborough City Council.

Cecilie Booth will be appointed to this position subject to member approval at a full council meeting on Wednesday 26 January. She will succeed Pete Carpenter, following his resignation from the post last month.

The statutory role is to administer the financial and property affairs of the council, act as principal financial adviser on all council projects, co-chair the authority’s joint commissioning and procurement committee, and represent advising external financial organisations.

Ms Booth brings many years of experience to this role, having graduated from the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA) in 1998. She began her career in the NHS as an internal auditor, before moving into local government positions. She also has experience working in the private sector as a financial consultant and most recently served as Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer for the City of London Police.

Councilor Andy Coles, Cabinet Member Responsible for Finance, said: “We are extremely pleased to announce that Cecilie will join the Council. She brings many years of experience and expertise to this position and I look forward to working with her and directing our effort towards financial sustainability, which is our number one goal.

Following a financial review last year by the government’s Department of Housing and Communities Upgrading (DLUHC), the board also agreed to appoint three independent members to its audit committee, including a new one. group president.

The DLUHC has recommended external appointments to help strengthen the composition and expertise of the committee, helping it achieve the best practices recommended by CIPFA.

Subject to the approval of the full board members, Chris Brooks will assume the chairmanship of the audit committee for a four-year term ending in May 2026, with Mike Langhorn and Dr Stuart Green also joining the group for the same term.

The trio have extensive experience in accounting and finance roles and were selected after applying for the positions advertised locally and nationally.
