Mannheim Township offers a very competitive salary and benefits package that rivals regional and national standards. Law enforcement is a demanding career, and the nature of a 24/7/365 organization requires a schedule rarely experienced outside of first responders and essential service providers. As such, the Township of Mannheim places a high priority on providing its officers with appropriate compensation to meet these demands. Financial compensation is only one aspect of these benefits.   • Salary and salary

    • The current starting salary for a police officer is $57,221. Officers receive annual pay raises during the first 6 years of employment leading to the maximum Patrol salary of $88,432 per year. Overtime is paid at time and a half and all off-duty events include a minimum of two hours of paid overtime. Officers who work on federal holidays receive “time-and-a-half pay,” or 1.5 times their regular hourly rate. Officers also receive an annual uniform and equipment allowance. The Township of Manheim offers annual bonuses to officers who have earned bachelor’s and associate’s master’s degrees. There are excellent opportunities for promotion, with corresponding salary increases. The police are paid every two weeks.

    • Manheim Township is one of the only municipalities in Lancaster County that hires candidates who are not Law 120 certified (i.e. those who have not completed the Lancaster Police Academy).     • MTPD uses a bi-weekly schedule of 12-hour shifts. Officers alternate between two weeks of day shift and two weeks of night shift, working no more than three shifts in a row. Officers work approximately 15 shifts per month.

    • In addition to approximately 15 days off per month built into the schedule, officers receive an annual allowance for vacation, lateness and bonus time. First-year officers receive 80 hours of vacation, with annual increases capping at 200 hours per year. All officers receive 104 hours of bonus and 104 hours of delay per year. Manheim Township also provides annual sick leave and bereavement leave stipends that officers can use accordingly.

  • Health care benefits

    • The Township of Manheim offers fully funded health, vision and dental benefits. This means that MTPD employees are not required to pay monthly premiums for this coverage. Health care coverage through Highmark Blue Shield includes an optional HSA, and the Township of Manheim pays $2,800 to each agent’s HSA each year. Vision coverage is provided by Davis Vision and dental coverage is provided by United Concordia. Coverage for health benefits begins immediately after hiring.

  • Pension and retirement

    • Mannheim Township offers an excellent pension plan which every officer is eligible for after reaching 25 years of service and 55 years of age. All active police officers pay each month into the pension fund a sum of money equal to 5% of their fixed allowance. Pensioners receive 50% of the average of the last 3 years of their annual salary. Retired officers also receive 100% coverage of municipal health care benefits at no cost to the retired officer.

    • In addition to the pension plan, MTPD officers have the option of enrolling in the Mannheim Township 457 plan, which is similar to a 401K. Deferred Compensation is a voluntary retirement plan that allows an executive to choose an annual payroll deduction amount to invest in their retirement fund. The money is tax-deferred until retirement or when the money is withdrawn from the account.
