Shocking statistics reveal high number of assaults on South Yorkshire police officers

Between March 2021 and March 2022, officers in South Yorkshire suffered 806 assaults, including 241 assaults that resulted in an injury to a constable and 565 without an injury to a constable across the region’s force.

In England and Wales, including British Transport Police, there were just over 41,000 assaults on police officers with 29,491 crimes of assault without injury to a constable recorded across all forces with an increase 11% compared to 26,539 the previous year.

And there were 11,730 recorded crimes of assault injuring a constable across all forces, including British Transport Police, a 2.6 per cent increase from 11,429 the previous year.

Shocking statistics have revealed a high number of assaults on police officers in South Yorkshire between March 2021 and March 2022.

A spokesman for the South Yorkshire Police Federation, representing officer welfare across the region, said statistics mean an average of 15 officers were attacked each week in March 2021 and March 2022 on the based on the figure of 806 officers having been assaulted in South Yorkshire during the same period.

South Yorkshire Police have previously described the rise in attacks on their officers as ‘worrying and unacceptable’ and they are still seeking to provide protection with body-worn video cameras helping to deter and bring offenders to justice.

Steve Kent, chairman of the South Yorkshire branch of the Police Federation, has raised concerns about the increase in assaults on officers during the Covid-19 pandemic with a marked increase in the number of disgusting examples of spat and coughed, which essentially armed Covid-19.

Judges at Sheffield Crown Court repeatedly stress when sentencing defendants for assaulting emergency workers that such behavior will not be tolerated and can often result in jail time.

The Avon and Somerset force recorded the highest total number of assaults on officers with 1,667 attacks during the reporting period and the Wiltshire force recorded the lowest figure of 292 with just three officers injured.

The data source for assaults on police officers is the Police Recorded Crime Series, which is published quarterly in “Crime in England and Wales”, published by the Office for National Statistics.
