Ten years in prison for the rioters of the capital

A New York man has been sentenced to the longest prison term in this case for his role in the January 6, 2021 attack on the US Capitol. A former NYPD cop was sentenced to 10 years in prison on Thursday for assaulting a security guard in Washington. US media reported unanimously.

Video released during the trial shows a 56-year-old Capitol police officer being attacked with a flag. He also ripped his gas mask from his face. He had already been found guilty on all six counts in May. The assailant claimed to have acted in self-defense.

On January 6, 2021, supporters of then US President Donald Trump violently stormed the Houses of Parliament in the capital, Washington. Congress gathered there to witness the victory of Joe Biden, Trump’s Democratic challenger in the last presidential election. Five people, including a policeman, were killed in the riots. Trump recently incited his supporters at a rally by saying his election victory was stolen. According to the US Department of Justice, more than 850 people have been arrested in connection with the Capitol storm since January 6.
